Japanese Exchange Student Visit

We were incredibly lucky to recently host a number of Japanese exchange students from Okinawa. Each exchange student stayed with one of our families, and got to go on a number of exciting excursions with school, as well experiencing everyday life, food and Australian culture.

Below are a number of reflections from our hosting students.

Makayla Williams

Having an exchange student was a great experience that I will never forget. As I continue to grow, I will always look back on this and reflect on all that I learnt and achieved whilst hosting a Japanese exchange student. Throughout the two weeks we were able to do many different things such as going to the aquarium, to the beach, to the footy, to Healesville Sanctury, to Great Ocean Road and to explore the city. Although we had some difficulties communicating, we were able to overcome it and I watched as her speaking and understanding improved. Overall, the two weeks in which I hosted a Japanese exchange student was very positive. I was able to learn more about the Japanese culture whilst also sharing my culture with her and I also made a friend that I can hopefully meet again sometime soon!

My family and I had the opportunity of hosting a student from our sister school in Okinawa for two weeks.

As host brothers and sisters, we hosted the exchange students in and outside of school, including two excursions.

Our first excursion to Healesville Sanctuary was memorable as we were able to see Australian wildlife animals. We took lots of photos and some of us were able to pet the kangaroos! We spent time getting to learning more about our Japanese students and their life in Okinawa. Some of the highlights for me on this excursion, was seeing some students buying jumbo sized koalas from the gift shop and exploring the sanctuary.

Our last excursion was a trip to the Great Ocean Road and Lorne. We visited the chocolate factory where we ate ice cream and bought more souvenirs to send back to Japan. We also stopped by the iconic Split Point lighthouse for more photo opportunities and to explore the area around the lighthouse. We ended the day with a picnic lunch at Lorne beach where we had fish and chips and played volleyball and soccer.

On a Sunday, we took the exchange students to a footy game at the MCG. It was exciting to witness Australian’s love for sports. This was definitely a highlight for many students!

Our Japanese guests joined us in our day to day routines at school, from our classes to lunchtime breaks. This was a memorable experience for us all as we learnt the differences between Japanese and Australian schools.

Overall, it was such a fun and rewarding experience to host these students, knowing that a lifelong connection has been created between the Japanese students and ourselves. I would highly recommend this hosting opportunity to anyone interested.

Cultural Diversity Week and Harmony Day

The week of the 18th saw Caroline Chisholm Catholic College celebrate Cultural Diversity Week, with Harmony Day on Thursday the 21st. It was a huge week, with a number of performances across both campuses, Cultural Dress and more!

Thank you to everybody who participated and made it such a successful week.

College Athletics Day

As always, our College Athletics Day was a highlight of the term!
It's so amazing to see all the students dressing up and competing for House Points!

Thank you to all the students who joined in, and all the staff who worked to hard to make it work!

End of Term 1 Assembly and Liturgy

Our final day of Term 1 finished with an Assembly and Holy Week Liturgy. There was great excitement as we celebrated the winner of our Athletics Day Carnival, Clare.

It's always heartwarming to see the encouragement students give each other as they cheer on our musical performers, and their enthusiasm as their friends are awarded the Spirit Award.

Congratulations to everyone who was recognised or contributed.

College Musical Rehearsals Continue

Term 1 has seen our College Musical get well and truly underway! Rehearsals have been continuing, with students singing, dancing, acting, and trying very hard to learn all their lines.
